THE future of central Grays has long been a feature of my postbag. It is now high time that we put the future of Grays higher up the agenda and put some real effort into making the town the best it can be.
On the plus side there are few empty shop units, which is positive. The main High Street banks are all there, which bring people to the town regularly.
But there is a need to expand the appeal and bring a new vibrancy to our town centre.
Without exception, my correspondents point to the missed opportunity of the currently unused State Cinema, which despite being much loved continues to sit there unused.
It is time for some civic leadership to bring it back to use. There is considerable scope to bring it into use as a multi-purpose venue for entertainment and leisure.
Undoubtedly it will mean Thurrock Council has to spend some money, but with healthy reserves and new income streams from non-domestic rates and the new homes bonus, the money is available if the council chooses to use it.
And it would be an investment which would pay dividends, as it would bring more people and more money into Grays town centre. Grays lacks a night-time economy. The State could be the foundation of that.
Furthermore, the Magistrates’ Court building is a venue which would lend itself to a new bar and restaurant.
It is also time to address the market. We have a very attractive urban space in our High Street which could be used to hold events to attract people.
Remember the success of the Olympic torch relay and how good that was for business? The High Street could be used for themed markets, funfairs and festivals.
It is now time for decisive leadership. There can be no better time to grasp this nettle.
