AS reported in the Gazette, the Government is now consulting on three options for a new Lower Thames Crossing. As predicted, all three options under consideration will run through Thurrock.
I have long argued we don’t need new crossings in Thurrock, but we do need new crossings between Blackwall and Dartford. M
ore crossings in East London would encourage regeneration and reduce demand at the overcrowded Dartford crossing.
Given the volumes of traffic currently using the M25, the Government should also be looking more imaginatively at the future road capacity needs for the South East and considering if there needs to be a new outer ring road, perhaps joining up with the A130.
The fact is the congestion at the crossing is causing serious problems on Thurrock’s roads.
Our economy depends heavily on our road infrastructure, but the levels of congestion are a real constraint on maximising the potential for job creation in the area.
As it is, the options before us will generate more volumes of traffic on the A13 and cause even more congestion on our roads.
I have challenged the Government to make sure any new crossing should not cause further congestion in Thurrock.
I have also said any new crossing must not lead to more of Thurrock being dig up to build new motorway.
And it is essential that any new crossing must alleviate the congestion we currently experience as a consequence of the Dartford crossing.
As far as I am concerned, the options before us fail these tests. They are no more than lines on a map and no thought has been given to the impact on local residents and motorists.
I am also renewing my call for the tolls to be free for all Thurrock residents.
I will make sure our voice is heard. But I would like to hear your views too so I can put them to the Government.
I am keen to hear from as many people as possible, both on the need for a crossing at all and on the individual proposals.
