I AM somewhat surprised that the lengthy front page article in this week’s Gazette concerning the closure of Tilbury Power Station has just a two line mention of the EU.
It states: “Bosses at RWE nPower chose to opt out of the 2008 EU directive that it could only continue to generate energy until the end of 2015, or for 20,000 more hours, which expired at noon on Tuesday.”
The sole reason for the demise of the Tilbury Power Station and the loss of hundreds of jobs is the UK governments slavish implementation of EU Directives.
Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price says “it is regrettable that so much money has been thrown at subsidising wind”.
Exactly! And why? Because the EU dictates that is what we must do.
As with the closure of the Ford plant in Southampton the loss of these jobs is directly attributable to the EU, perhaps the Government will now admit they either cannot or will not renegotiate our relationship with Brussels.
They are only too willingly comply with the dictates of the European Union, sacrifice the jobs of hard-working people, jeopardise the future of our energy supplies and force up electricity prices.
