THIS week in Down Memory Lane we look at the aftermath of the Great War.
Every parish in Thurrock had lost people to the war and funds were raised locally to build war memorials.
Tilbury erected a Peace Memorial and the Stanford-le-Hope memorial was unveiled on September 28, 1920.
My featured photograph is of the unveiling of the Stanford-le-Hope War Memorial with 84 names honoured on the plaques.
This was a major day for the town and the photograph shows many people present for the ceremony and unveiling with the removing of the Union flag.
This photograph was gratefully received for the Thurrock Museum photographic collection as a gift from Miss Graves of Stifford Clays.
Apparently her family were present standing by the Doctor’s House, now the pub called The Inn On The Green.
The details of the names dedicated on the memorial are in the new Stanford-le-Hope War Memorial book published by Steve Capes and available for sale in the museum.
We are now embarking on research for a major exhibition for the museum and a touring exhibition to Thurrock venues specially schools from August next year, so any further photographs or archives and personal stories of men and women affected during or after the war will be most welcome.
