LIKE many local people, I was dismayed to hear of hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money being siphoned out of the defunct Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation through “financial irregularities”.
I sat on the board of the TTGDC during its final year, and despite our protests, all of the elected representatives were removed several months before the final closedown.
It is now clear that with the elected members out of the way, some highly suspect payments to senior officials were made.
Some people still cynically believe local politicians are motivated by money.
This case shows the real problems actually occur when the spotlight of democratic scrutiny is removed.
CLLR PHIL ANDERSON Leader of Conservative Group, Thurrock Council.
