A MAN from Chafford Hundred hoping to take part in a race across the Atlantic Ocean has started fundraising.

Adrian Singelton, 49, was left with hemiplegia – effective paralysis to the left side of his body – when he was hit by a car in 1973, aged just nine.

But after recovering well, he is now bidding to raise £10,000 for HemiHelp and intends to take on a number of gruelling endurance challenges in preparation for the 2015/2016 Clipper yacht round-the-world race, where he intends to sail the final USA to Europe leg.

The building surveyor of Duarte Place, Chafford Hundred, has set himself the first challenge of swimming ten bouts of 500 metres at the Basildon Sporting Village Olympic pool every Saturday.

He hopes to have swam 5km by New Year’s Day.
