THURROCK’s labour parliamentary candidates have demanded answers from DP World as to whether local people will benefit from the new superport.
Mike Le-Surf, candidate for South Basildon and East Thurrock and Polly Billington, candidate for Thurrock, viewed the borough from the Thames and criticised DP World for failing to announce how many local people it has employed.
Polly Billington said: ”We have a great history and potentially a great future.
“DP World have pledged to recruit locally, but have yet to reveal the results of that recruitment. It is important that such a big local employer has the trust of the community and is making every effort to ensure local people get the chance to work there. It is disappointing that despite several requests that information has not been forthcoming.
“Our communities deserve some straight answers from DP World."
Mr Le-Surf said local people should be the beneficiaries of the £1.5billion port.
“I support the recognition of Unite the union at DP World as massive investment must bring increased employment and improved infrastructure to the area.”
