The level crossings in the borough at Grays and Purfleet are a constant source of frustration for residents. Will our political hopefuls push for a resolution form Network Rail if elected?

Jackie Doyle-Price, Conservative MP

GRAYS level crossing is dangerous and needs to be sorted, although I am less than impressed with plans for an underpass.

It will not be a pleasant place to pass though at night and will end up smelling of urine.

As for Purfleet, it will be dealt with as part of the regeneration.

I am optimistic the Government will approve our growth bid for Purfleet very shortly so we can get on with making this much-needed improvement a reality.

The level crossing at East Tilbury is urgent if we are to keep our roads moving. There are, however, burning issues outside Grays and it would be nice if this feature looked at them. Tilbury in particular needs some love.

Tim Aker, Ukip candiate

I CAN see why residents may sometimes get frustrated, but I think it’s the cost of having good, regular train services that give people freedom and the ability to travel.

On the whole, I think c2c provides a good train service in Thurrock, but more consideration should be given to keeping prices down as many are still feeling the pinch.

Network Rail should consult on options, but their general mismanagement over the Christmas and New Year period leaves a lot to be desired.

Polly Billington, Labour candidate

I WROTE to the Government last year urging it to take this issue seriously and to stump up the funds for solutions.

All it offered were safety leaflets. That’s not good enough.

The ambitious plans in Purfleet show solutions can be found.

Shifting the station and the road will mean the end of the headache of the level crossing.

But the Grays level crossing is one of the most dangerous in the East of England. Part of our Stand Up for Grays campaign is to push for a safer alternative.

There are plans for an underpass that people with buggies and wheelchairs can use easily. It needs to be well lit and safe with security cameras.

As Thurrock’sMP, I will work with Network Rail to sort this out.
