The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, was in Grays this afternoon to officially open the South Essex College Thurrock campus.
His unveiling of the plaque marked the official launch of the new campus, after South Essex College Thurrock opened its doors to students last September.
Before unveiling the plaque, the Earl of Wessex said: “Thank you very much for inviting me to join you today. This college is an investment for the future and I wish all the students here the very best of luck with what they wish to do – using the fantastic facilities here at this college.”
Angela O'Donoghue, Principal of South Essex College, said: “We are honoured to have HRH the Earl of Wessex officially open our new Thurrock Campus.
“It has been a privilege to welcome a member of the Royal household to the College and show the fantastic facilities to such a distinguished guest.
“Since we opened our doors in September last year, we have already seen hundreds more students and have seen Grays High Street alive with activity with students spending their money in the local shops.
“We are confident that this campus will go from strength-to-strength in the years to come.”
His HRH the Earl also mingled with students and staff.
Skye Bridle, 17, Somerset Road, Linford, of the college Students’ Union said: “It was such a great opportunity and honour to meet him. I wanted him to hear what students have to say about the college opening, not just teachers and staff.”
She added: "It’s a great college, the courses and facilities are amazing and I’m proud to come here.”
Sam Harding, 19, Paddock Close, Dartford, who is a ROH cultural heritage apprentice at the college said: “The Prince seemed very genuinely interested in what we were doing and he was very charming.”
Reece Dyas, 17, Argent Street, Grays, who is studying for a Public Services BTEC, said: “It’s a great opportunity to meet a member of royalty and I felt very honoured to meet him.”
