A MUM-of-two has become an internet best selling author with her first book about parenting.

Shola Alabi, 47, of Wood Avenue, Purfleet wrote her book 'Parents Understand Your Child.' as she has a passion for helping children and young people in their development.

The qualified teacher, with more than 15 years experience, has taught thousands of children and is currently running her own tuition centres in Grays and South London.

She said that she realised there are other important influences on the development of a child.

She added: "It came as a shock to my system to discover that I did not have all the answers - that I was not able to single-handedly cause a child to make progress in their school work.

"I slowly realised that the children that made the most progress were the ones who had more parent participation in their education.

"This became my journey of research and testing, on my own children, and it later resulted in me publishing the book 'Parents, Understand Your Child.'

The book was released on September 25, and it is already on the Amazon bestseller list in the parent participation category.

Shola said that she believes this book will fill the gap to help parents not to feel helpless in contributing to their child’s education.

Mrs Alabi added: "There is a limit to what teachers can do.

"As parents are often children's first teachers, this book equips parents to understand their individual children’s learning styles, gift and talents and gives practical ways the parent can help and support their child at home.

"Parents do not replace teachers but in the same way, teachers must not replace the role of parents in the vital role of educating these young minds."

Mrs Alabi said that for her this is not just about selling books, but she sees the book as valuable and accessible resource that parents can use even if they feel limited in their own academic abilities.
