An Indian restaurant chain is offering customers a free vindaloo curry if England wins the UEFA Euro 2020 Final on Sunday.
The award-winning family-owned chain of Kushi restaurants and takeaways, which has businesses in Grays, Romford, Canvey, Brentwood, South Ockendon, Linford and Tilbury is offering the free food.
Every customer who orders a vindaloo between now and kick off on Sunday, to eat on or takeaway, can claim another free throughout July.
Kushi restaurateur Sharif Uddin, said: "I’m so thrilled with England’s win against Denmark, I want customers to celebrate in traditional football fashion, with a vindaloo curry, in honour of the chart-topping anthem by Fat Les, loved by football fans.”
The business owner also donated 15,000 complimentary meals to frontline NHS staff, key workers, care home residents, elderly and vulnerable people in Essex and North Kent, during lockdown.
For those who find vindaloo too hot to handle, Kushi will be offering both the usual mouth-burning version of the dish, plus an authentic Goan rendering of the dish – which though spicy, is not the fiery interpretation served in most British curry houses.
‘Vindaloo’ is mistakenly thought to be derived from the Hindi word ‘aloo’ meaning potato. In reality it comes from the Portuguese – who colonised Goa in southern India – ‘carne de vinha d'alhos", which translates as ‘meat in garlic wine marinade’.
Kushi’s AA-rated executive head chef, Stephen Gomes, who is based at the group’s flagship fine dining DUSK multi cuisine restaurant in Brentwood, has developed an alcohol-free recipe for the six-strong group. Other venues are located in Grays, Romford, Canvey, Ockendon, Linford and Tilbury.
He said: “Not only are we hoping to celebrate an English victory with a favourite British Indian dish, I’m hoping to introduce local curry lovers to more traditional versions, based on family recipes handed down through the generations,” said Chef Gomes.
Vindaloo at Kushi cost £7.25 (vegan), £8.45 (chicken), £9.25 tikka or prawn, £9.75) (lamb), king prawn (£13.95).
To claim their free vindaloo, customers just need to present their bills from 8th to 11th July when ordering another vindaloo before the end of July, Sundays to Thursdays.
