LABOUR newcomer Sue Gray steps into the shoes of veteran councillor Margaret Jones after holding the Belhus ward for Labour.
She said: "I would like to thank everyone for all their support. I won't let you down."
Beaten Conservative Georgette Polly, a former Conservative Cabinet member who lost her seat in West Thurrock last year, was gracious in defeat, saying: "I'm pleased that the BNP haven't take the seat. I know Sue Gray to be a hard-working community person.
"I will be standing again in two years. We've had a lot of warmth on the streets and there is a need for Conservative representation in this area."
