The big picture: Tense thriller set on and under the streets of New York, stylishly directed by Tony Scott. When a highly armed gang led by Ryder (John Travolta) hijacks a subway train and holds the passengers to ransom, subway operator Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) has one hour to outwit Ryder and save their lives. But there's one puzzle Garber can't solve: even if the gang were to get their ransom, how could they possibly escape from underground?
