EAST Thurrock United Football Club has had it’s license to sell alcohol to the general public revoked.
Thurrock Council’s Licensing sub-committee pulled the license for the club, on Rookery Hill, Corringham, after police were called on several occasions to deal with underage drinking.
Committee chair, Councillor Rob Gledhill said: “We were told by the police that there had been numerous instances where the police had been called to the club because young people under 18 had appeared to have been served alcohol despite the conditions we had imposed at an earlier hearing.
“We took the decision after a great deal of thought and deliberation, all the more so because it is the first time a committee of this council has revoked a license of this sort.
“This decision relates solely to the premises licence and not to the private members’ club license held there.”
He added: “We also recommend that the police and the council’s licensing team work closely with the owner to look at temporary events to help raise money for the club.”
The committee listened to nine hours evidence and concluded that East Thurrock United’s bar can no longer supply alcohol to the general public, although its club licence still allows members to drink there.
The review was triggered by an application from Supt Maurice Mason, the former Chief Officer of Police for Thurrock, on the grounds of preventing crime and disorder; public safety; and the protection of children from harm.
The licensing committee had also earlier added conditions to the club’s licence following complaints from neighbours.
The club has the right of appeal against the decision.
District commander, Chief Insp Paul Moor said: "I am satisfied with the outcome of this hearing.
“The considerable time taken for the hearing clearly reflects the court's willingness to hear all of the evidence prior to making their decision.
“We will continue working closely with Thurrock Council's licensing department and will clamp down on any licensed premises seen to be flouting the law."
