PRESIDENT Vicky Turner opened the New Year asking for everyone to raise a glass to toast in the New Year. Tickets were on sale for the Spring Group meeting to be held in April.
Guest speaker this month was Brian Billins, who entertained with his interesting and amusing talk on the history of pubs and their signs.
First early signs on pubs were always accompanied by a picture - this was because many people were unable to read.
In the 1800s gin was cheaper than beer at three pence a quart (old money).
Many pubs had tunnels running under them that could be used by smugglers.
Pubs built on church land are always named the Cross Keys. The oldest known pub is Ye Olde Fighting Cock in St Albans.
Most popular names are the Red Lion and the Crown. Brian told many stories of the past era – some members had even visited the pubs he named.
After refreshments a short beetle game was played organised by Niki Garwood.
The competition, Bring a Beer Tankard, was won by Dorothy Hawes.
Raffle prizes were won by Margaret Camp, Niki Garwood, Nicky Nunn and Vicky Turner.
Next meeting is at West Tilbury Village Hall on February 1, from 7pm to 9.30pm.
A Beetle Drive and social evening will be held.
