NINETY-TWO students from Thurrock secondary schools were presented with prestigious Jack Petchey Achievement Awards at a ceremony held at the Civic Hall.

The event honoured award winners aged 11 to 25 from 13 schools who received medallions to go with framed certificate and a cheque for £200.

They were nominated by their peers and leaders, winning awards for a variety of achievements, but mostly for doing their best. Prize money has mainly been spent on extra resources and equipment.

Eight adults were also celebrated with Leader Awards who have demonstrated an ability to motivate young people. The Leader award winners received a medallion and a framed certificate. VIPs attending included mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Charles Curtis, who said: “I received a Jack Petchey Leader award some years ago, which was great. “Tonight we congratulate award winners who have achieved so much and I would like to thank Jack Petchey for having the foresight to allow this. It is times like this that make me so proud of our young people of Thurrock.”

Entertainment was provided by the Ockendon Academy Glee Club, pianist Rhys McArdle, from the Gateway Academy, St Clere’s Show Choir, singer Nicola Browne, from William Edwards School, and pupils from Treetops School.
