THURROCK ended a five-match losing run with an impressive home win against Maidstone.
Against another side lacking in confidence, Thurrock scored three converted tries in the second quarter to establish the platform for their victory.
Tom Worsfold had earlier missed an opportunity to put Thurrock ahead when his penalty sailed wide, as nerves appeared to be hampering both teams’ progress.
But Thurrock were to breakthrough first. Number eight Charlie Russo got the touch down from close quarters and Worsfold added the conversion.
From the restart, Maidstone won a penalty on the 35 metre mark, which was converted to close the gap to four.
But neat play from the hosts saw them stretch their advantage, with Ben Stanley scoring and Worsfeld converting.
Maidstone were reduced to 14 men and Thurrock capitalised - Worsfold taking the final pass from a lengthy attacking move, before converting himself.
Leading 21-3 at half-time, Thurrock were well in charge, although Maidstone started the second half brightly.
A penalty at a Thurrock line out saw a tap and run and Maidstone dotted down in the left corner, with the extras added.
And when a third try was scored shortly afterwards to reduce the advantage to just four points, there was some concern creeping into the home team’s play.
But Thurrock dug in and Maidstone’s revival hit the buffers. A late try by Thurrock left wing Jake Barrand made the game safe, touching down in the corner, to send the visitors home without the consolation of a losing bonus point.
Thurrock visit Old Colfeians on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).
