Thurrock 4ths 34, Witham 1sts 17 THURROCK’s fourth string started well, with the slope and wind and were soon on the scoreboard.
From a great driving maul from a line out, second row Tony Millsom crashed over from short range.
Other tries came as a result of further forward surges, coming from hooker Micky Carter, a further try from Tony Millsom and yet another from scrum half Danny Kearney, who scored by diving over a maul on the Witham line.
The last try of the half was scored by centre Richie Hackett after bouncing off and through several defenders.
However, during this time, the Thurrock line had been breached twice, for the first time this season, by the strong running and the faster forwards of Witham. The second half was going to be a big test of Thurrock’s character, uphill and against a hard blowing wind. This was compounded when prop Bridger had to leave the field with a severe leg injury.
Both second rows were now in the back row, and Grant Smith was brought on at second row, and he only came up to watch the game?!
Witham were now pounding the Thurrock line at every opportunity and using the wind well. The going in the seconbd half was decidedly stivcky in places but the 4ths showed true grit and Millsom crashed over wide out for his 3rd try. Thurrock are at the top of the BL table with 4 wins from 4.
This was an excellent win in very difficult conditions with a considerably depleted final team.
l Thurrock IV team are away to Wanstead 2nds next week.
