BASKETBALL: Southend Swifts’ under-16 boys side were seen off 97-50 against top-of-the-table Newham Sports Academy.

TJ Tarehwa was the only Swifts player to get in to double figures as he bagged 12 points.

Swifts under-18 side were also beaten heavily as they lost 94-44 against the unbeaten Barnet Bulldogs. Oliver Crussell scored 20 points.

The under-15 girls were more successful though as they saw off Northants Lightning 47-15 and Ipswich Bobcats 45-29.

Abbie Jones top-scored against Lightning with 15 points, while Ellie Warden led the way against Bobcats with 30 points.

Swifts’ under-14 girls were also celebrating after beating Ipswich Bobcats 84-69, thanks to 18 points from Louise Corfield.

The same day saw Swifts’ girls under-16 team demolish Uxbridge College 101-8.

There was a career high of 18 points for Chloe Bates, while all of her team-mates made their way onto the scoresheet.

But Swifts’ under-18 girls were unable to follow suit as they were beaten 71-64 by Ipswich Bobcats.

Sarah Cozens top-scored with 15 points, while Warden netted 14.

The under-13 boys were also beaten 82-58 by the Ipswich Tomcats, despite 20 points from Rhys Collings.

This weekend sees five of the club’s teams in action.

On Saturday, the under-14 and under-16 girls travel to Haringey for what are certain to be very tough fixtures, while the two older boys’ teams travel to Oxford.

The only home game sees the under-13 boys meet top-of-the-table Lewisham Thunder with a 1pm start.

On Sunday the under-16 girls again visit Haringey, this time for a cup semi-final encounter.
