NON-LEAGUE: Thurrock beat Welling 2-1 at the weekend and showed that they are coming back to form.
Fleet won two games in a row for the first time since October 2009 after a fantastic performance against the high-fliers.
Welling came out of the blocks quickly and earned a penalty after only 8 minutes when Rob Swaine committed a foul in the penalty area.
Lee Clarke smashed the penalty down the middle but it rebounded off of the bar and high up into the air, Swaine then won the header with Welling players waiting to put the ball in the goal.
Thurrock then started to get into the game and halfway through the half Liam Harwood headed just wide from a corner taken by the impressive Dagenham and Redbridge loanee Tommy Tejan-Sie.
With 38 minutes gone Thurrock took a deserved lead. Dean Cracknell played in Joe Carlos and the winger’s ferocious drive was tipped onto the post brilliantly by Mitchell Walker, unluckily for the keeper the ball hit him on the way out and Jamie Richards was left with the simple task of tapping in from on the goalline.
Thurrock came out quickly for the second half and doubled their advantage three minutes into the half.
Carlos was once again at the heart of things with a great cross, Matt Bodkin headed back and David Knight placed a brilliant header in from 12 yards out. Welling then started to dominate territory but Thurrock were sucking them in and breaking with Carlos and Bodkin on the wings.
Welling did get back into the game with around a quarter of an hour left when Cracknell was harshly adjudged to have fouled in the box and Andy Pugh stepped up to send Joe Woolley the wrong way and half the deficit.
Thurrock held on well for to earn the points in a game that was notable for Welling’s physical approach that saw six of their players booked and the referee having a good performance to keep them in check.
