NON LEAGUE: CRAIG Edwards says he goes into tomorrow’s derby with Aveley in the middle of the biggest crisis in his managerial career.

The former Grays, Chelmsford City, Redbridge and Dulwich Hamlet manager says that Tuesday’s defeat at Tooting - Billericay’s sixth straight league defeat - was the lowest point in all his time as a manager or a player.

Edwards arrived at New Lodge at the start of the season and had a side challenging for top spot by mid-November before a run of seven defeats in eight games in all competitions has left their season on the brink of ruin.

But the former boxer says he is not one to shirk a challenge and is ready to fight his way out of trouble.

He said: “it is a big test of character for me and my staff. But we can’t feel sorry for ourselves.

“We all had a long chat in the dressing room after the Tooting game and everyone remains upbeat and ready to turn things around.

“And for me, personally, this is the biggest challenge I have ever had in football, but I am up for it.”

Edwards says he is wary of an AVELEY side who are much-improved under new manager Carl Griffiths.

He said: “They are a pacy side and have signed some good players.

“But this is the perfect game to try and kick-start our season, and that is what we will be aiming to do.”

Billericay captain Ian Cousins has been ruled out of the game with a thigh problem, but right-back Greg Oates is likely to return from injury.

And new Town signing Benson Paka - who played under Edwards at Dulwich Hamlet - is pushing for a starting place after making his debut in midfield against Tooting.

Aveley manager Carl Griffiths, who went to see Billericay against Tooting on Tuesday, said: “I do feel a bit sorry for Craig at the moment. He is dealing with a few injuries and I thought they should have got something against Tooting.

“I often speak to Craig for advice and if I can achieve half of what he has done in the game then I will be more than happy.

“But come 3pm on Saturday that will all be put on hold until 4.50pm.

“There’s a lot riding on it for both teams and I’m expecting an exciting game.”

A healthy crowd is expected at Mill Field. Kick-off is at 3pm.
