BOXING: THREE Chadwell ABC fighters have just returned from a major tournament in Sweden.
The female fighters were competing in the Golden girl all female tournement and were accompanied to the large European event by Chadwell coach Chris Okoh.
Hollie Martin-Wood and Valerian Spicer, together with GB squad member and British Olympic hopeful Nina Smith, competed and the trio brought back two gold medals.
Competing in the junior under 54kg class Hollie Martin-Wood produced an excellant performance to beat her opponent Alina Sazonova from Bellarus 11-0. In the first round Hollie started confidently pushing her opponent back and forcing her on the back foot.
Boxing behind a good jab Hollie pressed forward throwing solid shots to head and body. In particular her left hook to the body was most effective.
She took the first round 5-0. Boxing behind a tight guard, In the second and third rounds Hollie continued her dominance over her game southpaw opponent. She won the bout 11-0.
In another straight final Valerian Spicer boxed Marija Jovanone from Sweden.
Coach Okoh said: “Spicer started positively, landing fast snappy jabs on her opponnent.
“Her accurate left-right combinations were perfect for the computer scoring system. In the second and third rounds, Spicer continued to outbox her Swedish opponnet.”
The Chadwell girl won with a 6-3 scoreline.
In the elite class under 51kg category, ABA champion and GB representative Nina Smith boxed the swedish number one Juliana Soderstrom.
After taking the first round 4-2, Nina continued to dictate the pace of the bout scoring with fast combinations. Going into the 4th and last round she was leading 8-5.
However, the strong Soderstrom started to pull back the scores with clever neat boxing skills. Nina was very unfortunate to loose 11-9 in what was a fast paced bout with a high skill level from both boxers.
Okoh was estactic. He said: “All three girls turned in excellant performances.”
He was frustrated with the result of Nina’s bout.
“In the last round the swedish judges just stopped pressing the buttons for Nina’s shots.”
“Since attending the ABA’s centre of excellance in Sheffield she has clearly improved and it was upsetting for her to loose after putting in such a punch perfect performance."
As a way of increasing her chances of making the 2012 olympics, Nina has recently taken the decision to go full time in her training. Nina will now attend the Sheffield centre four times a week. The Chdwell club will host their next club show on Saturday February 19 at the Thames Gateway Academy school in Tilbury.
