ATHLETICS: The Benfleet 15 mile cross country race lived up to its fearsome reputation at the weekend.

But despite the mud, sweat and tears, Thurrock Harriers braved the course which sees runners tacking muddy tracks, rock hard and potholed sea wall pathways, kerbs and even grassland.

Three Harriers braved the conditions and were all pleased with their efforts in a field of 583 competitors.

First home was John Green in 38th position in a time of 1 hour and 44 minutes.

He was closely followed by fellow borough runner John Russell in 42nd.

Jason Syrett finished in 105th in 1 hour 53 minutes. This was a considerable performance as it took a full five minutes off his time for the 15 mile course.

Many of the runners were using the distance as a measure for their progress in the run up to the London marathon which takes place in April and usually attracts scores of runners from Thurrock.

l At the Blackshots track at Grays the Thurrock Harriers have been running a series of races designed to test members and also allow joggers to measure themselves against club runners.

Coaches say a great way to meet the members at Blackshots and see how recreational runners measure up.

Last week saw the latest winter series run on Wednesday and the race was won by leading county runner Crispian Bloomfield of Billericay Striders in 15.59.

In his wake were two good performances by members of Harriers Victorious U20 county team. Adam Essa ran strongly in 17.20 to place second and 4th was Adam Dowman whose 18.15 reduced his PB by 20 seconds. Thurrock’s other finisher in 21.15 was Jack McGran.

The next of the monthly 5k and one mile races is on February 16. Races start at 7.30pm and anyone is welcome to start the track race.
