DIVING: Olympic silver medallist Peter Waterfield beat world champion Tom Daley in the final of the mens’s 10 Platform on the last day of competition at the British Gas National Cup at the new international diving pool at Southend’s Garon Park. The pair teamed up to compete together in the 10m synchro but yesterday reignited their rivalry in the individual competition in front of a packed house. The lead changed a number of times throughout the rounds but it was Daley who was on top at the half way point.
He scored 61.05 points for his attempt at one of the world’s hardest dives but still held a 12 point lead over his rival. Daley and Waterfield were both using the front four and a half somersaults tucked and it was the Southampton diver who scored highest with his attempt. Waterfield won the gold with a total of 494.25.
He said: “Last year I won this title off the back of an injury-ridden year but now I have come here off a strong year and retained my title which is great.”
Daley added: “It is obviously disappointing to not win.
“But I had a really long year last year and I just need to take the positives from this performance.” Commonwealth champion Max Brick won bronze with a score of 399.80.
The City of Leeds springboard trio of Chloe Hurd, Alicia Blagg and Hannah Starling took the medals in the 3m final.
