Grays Athletic 2, Heybridge 0 NON-LEAGUE: Goals from James Bunn and Joe Sweeney secured Blues’ fifth consecutive league win which saw them climb above Tilbury into fourth place, writes Chris Jones.
Hakan Hayrettin started with the same team that lined up against Ware last week, with Stephen Ikumelo at right back, and Bradley Thomas again partnering Grant Cooper in the centre of defence.
Blues took the lead in the 5th minute as James Bunn controlled a loose ball into the area and fired home from 12 yards.
Nathan Gordon had an excellent opportunity to double the lead moments later, however he fired against the ball from a similar distance.
Tony Tucker saved well when faced against a Heybridge attacker, however the remainder of the first half went by without too much incident.
Bradley Thomas went close early in the second half with a headed effort, whilst Tucker again saved well from Luke Callander.
The manager changed from his recently favoured 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 as Joe Sweeney came on for Stephen Ikumelo, whilst Jean Michel-Sigere replaced a tiring James Bunn.
With the clock ticking down, Sigere tussled with Heybridge right back Ashley Cole following a throw-in, and with the ball seemingly heading out for a goal kick the Frenchman laid the ball across for Sweeney to tap in from close range to seal the win; that goal being Sweeney's tenth for the club.
